I know a guy who imports cars. IIRC, his company has imported 4 Nismo R32s. The company is International Vehicle Importers.

Why is the '98 Porsche GT1 on the list? I thought race cars were exempt from Show and Display.

I'd like to know who the U.S. owners of the CLK GTR are.
I also assume that every single Porsche on the list in owned by Jerry Seinfeld because, you know, Seinfeld and Porsches.

It's been a while since I watched that particular episode, but isn't this the Merc which Martin Brundel allegedly (and, it happens didn't) said had the best something or other he'd ever experienced?
I would so drive this car like an idiot.

Actually this is the GT1 Straßenversion / Strassenversion (street version). I guess somebody made a typo here.
Why are there cars over 25 years under the show and display thing? I thought those are legal to bring to the US. Not that it matters for me though, I'd rather get myself some US car to Europe if I had the money. That seems for more easy.
![]() 05/18/2014 at 06:46 |

I suspect the over-25s are just left over from the older lists.

Could someone please enlighten as to why you can only show these car's but not drive them on the roads but yet you can if it's over 25 years old
We don't have anything like this in the UK as long it meets the construction reg's of the date it was built and changes to the lights like rear fog lights and such like again for the right year and the speedo to read mph it's and pay the tax man what's due it all good to import anything

Most places allow you to import non EU spec cars fairly easily so long as they can pass safety and emissions testing so you'll need (for example) to put proper lights on an American one. Some of us live in places where registration taxes make it prohibitively expensive to import something that doesn't have official EU CO2 figures but that's another matter. Why you would actually want to import one is of course another matter altogether.
![]() 05/18/2014 at 16:19 |
|
Their 25 year rule was surprisingly introduced at the behest of Mercedes who were concerned about the effect used imports would have on their new sales. The Canadians have a 15 year rule which is still silly - it means you can only import older, dirtier, less safe cars.
![]() 05/18/2014 at 16:36 |
|
Yes, that's basically what I meant. There are even companies here in Germany that specialized in transforming US cars to EU standards, i.e. changed lights and stuff. Considering the US law it seems far easier to get f.e. a Dodge Challenger SRT (which I'd want to have, had I the money) legally registered in Germany then getting a BMW 320d touring (which Jalopnik seems to like) legally registered in the US.
![]() 05/18/2014 at 16:40 |

These are available basically for free in the UK if anyone wants to be the proud owner of a rare and exclusive "Show and Display" car.
My next door neighbour has one rusting on his driveway. He keeps his lawnmower in his garage so it doesn't rust, the lawnmower is more fit for purpose as a car than an MGF/MG TF.
![]() 05/18/2014 at 17:07 |
|
Yes, we used to have Japanese importers who brought in all kinds of rarities. Not any more as tax changes make cars not similar to EU ones prohibitively expensive.

Going by this list the Saab 9-5 Aero Combi Hirsch Edition one-of-fifty made station wagon I saw for sale in Switzerland for 6000 Euro would qualify. I'd just have to do all the paperwork to prove it was a one-of-fifty and indeed rare, and bring that big Swedish-Swiss carbon-fiber laden wagon over.

So why is the Show & Display exemption limited to a list as opposed to just any old car you want to import, and how do you get a car onto that list?

I saw one of these in person at the Winter Park Concourse in FL. What a beautiful and brutal machine. Here is a link to Tiff Needell driving one: Tiff Needell in a MB CLK GTR.
